β‘ IPTV Buffering Fixes β Tested March 2026
Before applying any fix, run this quick 3-step diagnosis to identify what's causing your buffering. Different causes need different solutions β applying the wrong fix wastes time.
On your Firestick or Smart TV, open the browser and go to fast.com or speedtest.net. Run the test and note both your download speed and your ping/latency.
What you need for buffer-free IPTV:
β’ Download speed: 10 Mbps minimum for HD, 25 Mbps for Full HD, 50 Mbps for 4K
β’ Ping: Under 80ms. High ping causes freezing more often than low speeds
β’ Jitter: Under 20ms. High jitter (inconsistent ping) is the #1 cause of buffering during live sport
If your speed is fine but you're still buffering, the problem is almost certainly ISP throttling, DNS, Wi-Fi interference, or app cache. Continue to the fixes below.
Important: Run the speed test on the device you stream on β not your phone or laptop. Many users have great speeds on their phone but slow speeds on their Firestick due to Wi-Fi band issues.
Different UK ISPs handle streaming traffic very differently. Here's what we found testing IPTV on the three biggest UK providers in 2026:
Uses aggressive traffic management 6pmβ11pm. Streaming traffic is often deprioritised on the M100βM350 plans. Congestion on shared cable nodes is common in dense areas.
β οΈ Most ThrottlingGenerally good for IPTV. Smart Hub 2 has good default settings. Throttling less common than Virgin but DNS issues occasionally affect streaming performance.
β Generally OKSky's own broadband performs well for IPTV as long as you're not on Sky TV simultaneously (which competes for bandwidth). DNS can be slow on default settings.
β Good PerformanceThis single change eliminates buffering for most users. Wi-Fi signals are affected by walls, microwave ovens, neighbouring networks and device distance from your router. A wired Ethernet connection has none of these problems.
For Firestick: Buy a Fire TV Ethernet Adapter (Β£15 on Amazon). Plug it into your Firestick's micro-USB port, connect an Ethernet cable from the adapter to your router, and remove your Wi-Fi connection in Firestick settings.
For Smart TV: Most Smart TVs have a built-in Ethernet port on the back. Connect directly with an Ethernet cable β no adapter needed.
If Ethernet isn't possible: Move your router closer to your streaming device, or switch from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz Wi-Fi in your device settings. The 5 GHz band has less interference and higher speeds over short distances.
Result: Switching from Wi-Fi to Ethernet typically reduces latency by 60β80% and eliminates jitter almost completely. This is the most effective single fix for live sport buffering.
Your ISP's default DNS servers are often slow and can cause buffering by taking too long to resolve streaming server addresses. Switching to a faster public DNS takes 2 minutes and makes a noticeable difference.
Recommended DNS servers:
β’ Primary: 8.8.8.8 (Google DNS) or 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare)
β’ Secondary: 8.8.4.4 (Google) or 1.0.0.1 (Cloudflare)
On your router (recommended β applies to all devices):
Log into your router admin page β usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 in your browser. Find DNS settings under WAN or Internet settings. Replace your ISP's DNS with 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. Save and restart your router.
On Firestick only:
Settings β Network β select your Wi-Fi β Advanced β Set IP to Static β Enter DNS1: 8.8.8.8, DNS2: 8.8.4.4
Virgin Media specific: Virgin's default DNS servers have known issues with streaming traffic during peak hours. Changing to Google DNS 8.8.8.8 is one of the most commonly recommended fixes on the Virgin Media community forums and resolves buffering for many users.
Over time IPTV apps accumulate corrupted cache data that causes buffering, freezing and crashes. Clearing cache takes 30 seconds and often fixes persistent buffering immediately.
On Firestick:
Settings β Applications β Manage Installed Applications β IPTV Smarters Pro β Clear Cache β Clear Data
Then restart the Firestick: Settings β My Fire TV β Restart
On Android TV / TV Box:
Settings β Apps β IPTV Smarters β Storage β Clear Cache β Clear Data
On Smart TV:
Samsung: Settings β Support β Device Care β Manage Storage β select app β Clear Cache
LG: Settings β General β Storage β App List β select app β Clear Cache
Most people restart their streaming device when they buffer, but the router is more often the culprit. Routers build up NAT tables and connection logs over time that slow down all traffic β including IPTV streams.
Correct restart procedure:
1. Power off your router completely β switch off at the wall, not just standby
2. Wait 60 seconds minimum β this clears all RAM and NAT tables
3. Power back on and wait for full reconnection (2β3 minutes)
4. Test your stream again
For best results, make this a habit β restart your router once a week to maintain peak performance.
Don't just press the router's reset button β that factory resets the device and wipes your settings. Use the power switch or unplug the power cable.
Quality of Service (QoS) is a router feature that prioritises certain types of traffic. When misconfigured, it can deprioritise IPTV streaming traffic β causing buffering even when you have plenty of bandwidth.
How to disable QoS:
Log into your router admin panel (192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1). Look for QoS, Traffic Management or Bandwidth Control in advanced settings. Disable it completely.
Virgin Media Hub users: Log into 192.168.0.1 β Advanced Settings β Traffic Prioritisation β disable all rules that don't relate to your IPTV device
BT Smart Hub users: Log into 192.168.1.254 β Advanced Settings β Bandwidth β QoS β set to Off
Some ISPs β particularly Virgin Media β throttle streaming traffic during peak hours by identifying it as video streaming and applying traffic management. A VPN encrypts your connection so your ISP cannot see what type of traffic you're sending, effectively bypassing their throttling.
Best free option: Proton VPN free tier β no data limits, decent speeds, works on Firestick
Best paid option: ExpressVPN or NordVPN β fastest speeds, dedicated Firestick apps, 30-day money-back guarantee
How to use a VPN on Firestick:
Search for your VPN app in the Amazon App Store β Install β Log in β Connect to a UK server β Open IPTV Smarters and test your stream
Note: Only use a VPN if you've confirmed your ISP is throttling. VPNs can actually reduce speeds if your ISP isn't the problem β apply this fix after testing without VPN first.
Quick ISP throttle test: Run a speed test at fast.com (Netflix test) and compare to speedtest.net. If fast.com shows much lower speeds, your ISP is throttling video streaming traffic specifically.
IPTV Smarters Pro has a buffer size setting that controls how much of the stream is pre-loaded before playback starts. Increasing this helps on slower or inconsistent connections.
In IPTV Smarters Pro:
Settings (gear icon) β Player Settings β Buffer Time β increase from default (usually 2000ms) to 5000ms or 8000ms
Higher buffer means slightly longer initial loading time (3β5 seconds extra) but much smoother playback once started. This is especially useful for live sport where small network fluctuations would otherwise cause freezes.
Alternative player option: If IPTV Smarters still buffers after all fixes, try switching to ExoPlayer within the app settings β it handles variable-bitrate streams better on lower-spec devices like older Firestick models.
If you've applied all 7 fixes and still have issues, the problem may be your current IPTV service's servers β not your internet. IPTV Storm runs on dedicated high-bandwidth servers built specifically for stable streaming. Try our free 24-hour trial and compare the difference.

Virgin Media buffering fix checklist:
β
Change DNS to 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4 in Virgin Hub settings (192.168.0.1)
β
Switch to Ethernet β Virgin's Wi-Fi performance varies significantly by area
β
Test speeds at different times β if buffering is only 6pmβ11pm, it's congestion not your setup
β
Enable "Super Hub" mode (disable modem mode) if you're using a separate router
β
Use a VPN if throttling test confirms traffic management is active
β
Contact Virgin and ask them to check your node utilisation β they can identify congested nodes
BT's Smart Hub 2 is generally reliable for IPTV but has some quirks with IPTV traffic. These fixes address the most common BT-specific issues:
BT buffering fix checklist:
β
Change DNS on BT Smart Hub: log into 192.168.1.254 β Advanced β DNS β set 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1
β
Disable Smart Setup in BT Hub settings β it can interfere with streaming DNS resolution
β
Switch to 5 GHz Wi-Fi band or Ethernet
β
Check BT's traffic management schedule β BT applies management on standard plans 5pmβmidnight if you exceed 100GB on Fibre Essential
β
Upgrade to BT Fibre 2 or above if you're on entry-level ADSL β ADSL speeds are often insufficient for HD IPTV during peak hours
